Am starting with the movie today. Will do some screen caps of uniforms and props as I go.

I've only ever seen this movie all the way through once, and that was long after I had fallen in love with the TV show, so seeing other people playing those roles is pretty difficult.

Maybe I'll feel differently this time through. We'll see.

Resumption of efforts

Well, I got rebitten by the SG bug. They've been doing auctions of some of the last remaining costumes and props from the series, and while I haven't got the do re mi to get me some of the screen worn hero costumes, I did buy a screen worn blue flight suit and got the uniform itch again.

I'm going to start watching the show(s) again from the begining and trying to work my way through the various uniforms I think I can manage. I also found a few good sites offering fairly decent costumes so I might not have to do everything myself.

Not really young enough to be doing a lot of off-world missions anymore, but even General Hammond went through the gate once in a while.

I might have to give Col. Shandar a promotion and get him a star for his collar.

Backpack III

Still unable to locate anywhere the Blackhawk Slimline Backpack used in the show.

I have found what might be the most reasonable alternative. Reasonable in terms of look, but not price.

This is the X-3 Raptor, found at www.copsplus.com priced at just under $250.00. Even with free shipping, that's a purchase my wife is really going to balk at for a costume accessory.

Still, if you gotta have it, you gotta have it. This pack is pretty nice, and has two pockets on one side, one on the other. That means if you can live with it not being completely canon, you won't have the headaches of converting the M16 pouches you'd have if you did find a Slimline somewhere. Bear in mind, even though all the websites still listing the Slimline at $74-$79 are Out of Stock and you'd likely end up paying more than $250 to get someone to part with their "collectible" item if you did find one some place.

So, there you have it. I'm saving my pennies and keeping secrets. I think this is the pack I'm going to go with.

The thing about canon is that we're talking about a TV show here, and a storyline that spans ten years. I think that allows you some leeway, and I'm going to consider anything that might be used by the actual US military to be fair game, whether it ever appeared on the show or not.

For example, I just got a screenworn away jacket from the show. Because it was made in Candada by a costume shop, the zipper is backwards from most US military wear. Does that mean that only jackets with backwards zippers are canon? I certainly wouldn't want to impose that restriction.

Anyway, if you find a better backpack alternative than the X-3, let me know. I'll be grateful, especially if you find it before I save up the $250!

Backpack II

In doing some more research, I found a discussion regarding the backpacks on Scifi.com forums. "Captain Carboard" says in the forum that the backpacks used by the teams is the "Blackhawk Omega Streamline Load Bearing Pack that was modified with extra pouches. Here are some images of the backpack and the pouches:

He says that they attached M16 mag pouches, four of them, to the sides. He wasn't sure what the two large pouches were made from. The M16 pouches look like this:

Unfortunately, Blackhawk no longer makes the Streamlined LBP (Load Bearing Pack), and so it is (like so much SG costume material) nearly impossible to find. Captain Cardboard says that a company called Eagle makes a copy, but that was years ago, and I've been unable to locate it. They may have discontinued it also.

You, like myself, are probably going to have to make do with the Blackhawk Day Pack from the previous post...if you can find one of those. I think that sticking the M16pouches on the other backpack should help improve the look.

UPDATE: I located a seller of these backpacks, or so it seems.

The company is selling them for around $80. My order was just over $90 with shipping. The description is as follows:

SLBP stands for Streamlined Load Bearing Pack, which I think, is what we've been looking for. Again, I'll let you know if I get the pack or a backorder notice.

Backpack

This is a good shot of the backpacks from the show. I have not been able to find exact replicas of these, but the closest I have come is the backpack below, as recommended by several Stargate uniform sites.

It is possible that this backpack is the one used on the show, but modified with extra packs. You can see the canteen holder on the right side as well. It might also be the image above, from Season 1, is not the same backpack as was used in later episodes. As I slowly move through the DVDs doing screencaps and attempting to recreate the uniforms, I'll let you know what I find out.

In any event, this pack is pretty close.

The above image is an example of the BlackHawk Special Operations Day Pack. You can find the following description at this website: www.copsplus.com, but you won't find the backpacks. They are discontinued and out of stock.

The BlackHawk day pack is the ideal way to carry your gear directly on your vest or H-harness. Made of 1000D Nytaneon nylon. The back of the pack has 3/8" closed cell foam for added comfort and flotation, if used in maritime situations. Formed elastic on the bottom of the pack holds extra gear.

Now, as of today, I did find the packs in both OD and Black at this site: www.rstacticalgear.com

The packs are are around $60 each. You'll need to buy the H-harness separately, though usually the packs are attached to the tac vest in later episodes. I ordered one tonight from them, will let you know if it arrives or I get a back order notice.

In the pilot, however, it is clear that the H-harness is woodland camo. This leads me to believe that the backpack in the pilot is similar to the one I just purchased moments ago on eBay:

I think given the other "off the rack" surplus of the uniforms in the pilot before SG Teams were formed and they got their own patches and uniforms, it is a safe bet that what Carter and O'Neill are wearing is a standard Alice pack with frame in woodland camo and a 3-color desert camo cover drawn over the pack. Fortunately for me, in my very cheap eBay purchase, the camo cover comes with!

I consulted with my friend, the one who spurred on this new wave of doing stuff for Science Fiction, who has a military background.

He told me the technical name for the cover is "desert backpack cover".

You can probably find them easily at most surplus stores or a Google search. I'm told they make excellent spare tire covers for your Jeep. Not having a Jeep, I'll take that on faith, but seems like a good idea!

Goggles

In later episodes, O'Neill had more high-tech goggles, including some designed for Stargate by Wiley-X.

Helmet

In getting my uniforms ready for Shevacon, I decided that I'm going to start with putting together the 3-color desert camo from the pilot.

The team wears helmets in the first offworld trip, so let's begin with the helmet. I found this one online in plastic, which is fine, as I am unlikely to need to actually stop a bullet with it, but just need it to look good in the photos.

You can get them for under $20 at the site, but I actually got mine for under $15 from the same seller on Amazon.com.

I'll also need a camo cover and goggles. The covers are pretty easy to get at any surplus store, but if you don't have one in your neighborhood, the cheapest place to get them is from the US Cavalry Webstore.

The goggles in the above shot seem nearly identical to ones I found at Coleman's Military Surplus for around $20.

Beretta 92 FS

O'Neill's sidearm is the Beretta 92 FS.

Well, technically, the military designation for the Beretta is M9, but it is likely that the prop weapons used in the show are the civilian version. This is the most commonly used sidearm in the show.

You can get a very nice spring powered model of this gun at http://www.softairusa.com/. I picked mine up off the shelf at Dick's Sporting Goods today for under $35.

I'd purchased something that was supposed to be an airsoft Beretta from an eBay retailer, but upon receipt discovered that it was not a 92, it was a .45. Not bad to have in the AirSoft armory, but not what I needed for my rig.

This has a nice heft to it as well, with a realistic clip that slips out of the pistol grip and authentic cocking action.

Very pleased with it.

I've been swamped by IRL stuff since way back before the summer. I've also piled back on the pounds. In short, I am nowhere near mission ready.

However, recently a friend said to me that he downloaded all the available Battlestar Galactica episodes, and ended with "What have YOU done for Science Fiction today?"

That grated on me...I was letting a lot of days slip by without doing anything for Science Fiction. Then, this same taunting friend had a birthday party over the weekend and one of the guests was a big shot at the local Science Fiction convention, Shevacon, which is held in February.

I wore my blue BDUs with on base patches to the party, it was an overnight drinking binge in a barn out in the country, and this guy from Shevacon says that I should register for the conference and wear a different one of my Stargate uniforms each day of the con.

That means I have until February to get "mission ready."

OK, from now until February I'm going to try to do at least one thing for Science Fiction every day. A perfect reason to restart the uniform blog.

I really am looking forward to it. What I'm not looking forward to is the losing 20-25 pounds. I really do believe that you can't pull off the recreation of the look if your body isn't capable of passing a fitness test.

Well,

It deeply saddens me, but doesn't exactly surprise me, but the two most comprehensive Stargate Uniform sites have disappeared off the net. I'm keeping the links active on this blog, in the hope that they might return someday.

If anyone knows the reason why they went away, please post and let me know.

This does, however, provide me with the kick in the BDUs to actually get my own gear in order and start posting my version of the uniform guides they had on their sites as a reference to those who would like to put on the uniform and imagine going off world...espescially now that Stargate Worlds game is coming out.

I'll try sending an email to Eggroll and see what he knows...because he pretty much knows everything. I hope it isn't bad news for or about LT.

Until Stargate6 comes back, I guess I've got your six.

Motorola Visar 800

Finally picked up a Motorola Visar 800 radio for my rig on eBay. Only $20, including shipping!

This is very sweet news, as I've been trying to get one for almost a year, and as yet have seen nothing for less than $100.

Happy day, happy day.

Since I mostly do Jack style uniform, I will probably wait a while to get the newer Motorola used by the teams in the last two seasons....and who knows what they use in the new movie.

Magnum 8" Response Boot

The standard footwear of the members of SGC and the SG off world teams is the Magnum 8" Response Boot. Most of the team don't wear the side zipper version, but if you need to take them off everytime you come in the house, you might consider that.

They come with a comfort gaurentee, and I have to say that they are the most comfortable boots or shoes I've ever worn. I love them for casual wear out of uniform as well as suited up in the rig.

Zat Gun

P90 Tactical Mag Pouch

Frewuently when offworld, you need all the ammo you can carry on your person. The tactical vests worn by the SG-1 Team are Blackhawk Omega Tactical Medic Vest, with lots of nice pouches but none for extra mag clips for your trusty P90. Most often you will see the team carrying their extra mags in pouches strapped to their legs.

Where do you get that?

You can find them in various online stores, but probably the best and most affordable are from The Vest Guy. Prices are under $60, less shipping.

P90 Tactical Sling

If you have been looking for a good P90 sling that looks like the ones used on SG-1, you've probably been looking for a long time.

LT at Stargate6.com used to have just about the best accessories and uniforms, but since his mysterious disappearance a few years ago, the whole shop has been taken off the web.

Today, about the best place to get a reasonable p90 sling like they used on the show is from The Vest Guy. His prices are around $50-$60 at the online store, but you can usually get them $10 cheaper on eBay. Just do a search for P90 sling.

3-Color Desert MA-1

Some of you sharp eyed watchers out there might have noticed that in the pilot for Stargate SG-1, the off world team were wearing 3-color desert flight jackets that didn't look exactly like the more familiar WEP jackets from the series run. They have a different collar without the button flap and the interior lining is a bright orange color. Above is an image from the pilot, clearly showing this style of jacket.

The style of flight jacket is the MA-1, in 3-color desert camo.You can get a very detailed history of the jacket by going to www.flightjacket.com, but they do not have it available in the tri-color camo.

After a lengthy search for this type of jacket to round out my collection, I got a heads up from Dave at Stargate6.com, who found this resource. He let me know that this type of jacket can be obtained for under $100 at Army*Navy Sales.

I ordered mine this morning. Let the stargatery re-commence!

Posting Again

I'd really hoped that I could post these in a methodical order, starting with the BDUs and going through each of the different uniform sets...but trying to be methodical has meant nearly a year of not posting at all.

I got my green and blue BDU sets all finished, then lost 20 pounds so they don't fit right any more and I have to start over...that has led to some serious foot dragging.

I'd wanted to blog about the saga of trying to dye down my WEP, but before I could I gave up completely and found a way to get a nearly perfect version of the ripstop jacket from B&G.

Anyway...I'm a little worried about Stargate6 continuing to be around, so as a back up I'm going to just do a bunch of posts out of order with info on the various sites they list for supplies just in case I should ever log in and it is gone.

Apologies for the hap hazard posts you're going to get instead of my master plan, but the labels on the side should still help you get the posts organized.

O'Neill Glacier Glasses

P90 Swing Sling

Sorry that I haven't posted here for awhile. Real world stuff has gotten in the way of my Stargatery...but I'm making a comeback.

Still searching for a reasonably priced P90 sling, and this looks like the best option available. It is not the standard sling used most frequently on the show, but if you don't need to be 100% canon because you are not trying to be a specific character from the show, this would work.

You can get it from Airsoft Atlanta but I'm betting quantities are limited.

Green 2-Pocket BDU

Worn alternately with the blue 2-pocket BDU, this is the most common uniform worn on base inside Cheyene Mountain. Shown here are the 2-pocket cotton ripstop jacket and 6-pocket pants of the same material. The pants are worn with an olive drab web belt and Magnum boots. The standard black pocketless t-shirt is also worn. Both the blue and the green 2-pocket BDUs can be quickly distinguished from the standard 4-pocket BDUs by their epaulettes at the shoulder.

General's stars are worn on the collar, rather than the epaulettes, but in general rank insignia is not worn on these uniforms, only the SG-1 or SGC patch and the Earth patch.

Blue 2-Pocket BDU

This is my Blue 2-Pocket BDU uniform. The material is cotton Rip-Stop. This uniform is worn with the regulation black t-shirt (no pocket) and patches attached with velcro.

It took me quite a while to figure out how Mitchell rolls his sleeves up so that the buttons are visible, but I think I finally got it.

This uniform is very rarely worn off-world, and is used primarily for on-base wear in Cheyene Mountain. Most of the BDUs on the show are faded to a lighter blue, but they all started off this dark.

The now standard firearm of the SG teams, and the expressed favorite weapon of Jack O'Neill is the P90. The image above is taken from the Airzoft.com webstore. This is the inexpensive Well D-90H P90 AEG. I got mine for the sale price of $29.95 and if you're interested more in costuming than airsofting, this is a real deal. It has a hefty weight and is a great little gun. My only reservation about it is that it doesn't come with a flash hider, only the silencer. I might have to make one out of PVC pipe or see if I can pick one up cheaply on-line. Or...I might have to buy the gun below for my OD uniform and just keep this one with the silencer on it for my black uniform rig.

if you're serious about airsofting, or have the disposable income for major costume choices, the above gun is the one you want.

AEG Electric Tokyo Marui FN P90 Assault Rifle PDW Airsoft Gun
TM-P90TR is pretty close to the top of the line and comes with (I believe) the clear clip with fake bullets in it. Price is between $275 and $300...before you start doing all the extra add ons like scope and flashlight.

Once you have the gun, you will want to get your hands on the P-90 sling and triple-mag pouch for your leg. You can get those for another $100 or so from TheVestGuy.com. He's got the most reasonably priced and accurate Stargate P90 slings on the market right now.

The P90 with the 3 rails and no red dot scope is called the P90TR or Triple Rail Model.

Tactical Vest

The standard tactical vest worn by the SG teams is the Blackhawk Omega Medic Vest, and it can be obtained for under $100 at Elite Tactical Sources.

These vests do not come with a pistol belt, and one is required for the vest to be worn properly. DO NOT buy the Blackhawk Modernized Web Belt, as you'll only be wasting your money. The SG teams wore a style of pistol belt with double grommets in them.

Pistol Belts

The pistol belt is an important costume/equipment element. You will need one to attach your holster and extra ammo pouches to, as well as to complete your tactical vest.

The Blackhawk Omega Medical Tactical Vest, standard wear for SG teams, does not come with a web belt. If you order the one on the Elite Tactical Supplies page they recommend for the vest you will only be wasting your money because the belts worn by the SG teams have double grommets on them, like the old WWII pistol and gear belts.

I ordered mine in black and in tan from Barre Army Navy Store and was delighted by the product and service. The Tan belt I ordered in Medium and it fits very well (my waist is dropping from 38" to my goal of 36") but the black one in Medium was almost too short. Because they are adjustable, if you have any doubt, I'd say get the larger choice. You can adjust to smaller waist, but if you run out of belt, you can't adjust to larger waists.

Rubber Bayonet

All the SG teams wear a bayonet on their belts, or on their tac vest. I'd really recommend getting a rubber one rather than a real one. This is for personal safety and the safety of others. This rubber bayonet, from Evike.com, is probably the best available, but it comes in black and will need to be painted to look realistic, though if you never take it out of the sheath, then you don't need to worry about painting the blade.

You might want two or three, so that you can have one with tan handle, one with black, and one with OD.

That being said, I did find an M16 Rubber bayonet with sheath that normally sells for $24 currently on sale at Gamesfantasy for only $9.60. That might be the better bet. You compare and decide.

O'Neill's Goggles

In later seasons, O'Neill can be seen wearing these goggles. The used to be available at SeisSports.com, but all recent checks have shown them out of stock and I haven't found another supplier.

Again, for costuming, study the originals and then work to get as close as you can.

Also, be advised that these are not sufficient protective gear for Airsofting. Please only wear quality protective eye gear for shooting.

Team Watch

The first few seasons of SG-1 the off world teams used the Casio G-Shock DW8300-1VT. These are nearly impossible to find today, as they aren't commerically available any longer. They pop up on eBay from time to time, but they are outrageously expensive when they do. I recently saw just a replacement parts kit and that was nearly $100.

I think that if you study the photo you should be able to find a much cheaper watch for costuming purposes that will suit your needs adequately for pictures.

Later seasons of the show, the teams used the Suunto Vector. If you want your watch to cost almost twice as much as your uniform, I'd say go for it, but realistically, any similar watch will work for costuming purposes.

Motorola Visar Radio

The standard 2-way radios carried by the SG teams in their tactical vests is the Motorola Visar Non-DTMF. It is the version without the keypad.

10 years ago, when the series started, these were top of the line two-way radios, but they are increasingly difficult to find, even on eBay, and when you do they are fairly expensive. I'm still looking for a non-functioning one for my costume, but haven't been able to find anything under $80.

Even the SG-1 teams no longer use this radio, as is demonstrated in this posting thread at the Stargate6 forum: New radios on SG-1 started by Riceball. Those guys over there really know their stuff!

Over a series of posts I will be putting up images which represent various unforms worn in the series.
The unforms here are of base personel before the Stargate Program is activated. They are wearing traditional woodland BDUs.

The sergeant here is wearing the woodland BDUs and black beret.

This is an excellent shot of General Hammond in blue uniform with ribbon bars.

Notice that the jackets vary slightly from those used in the rest of the series. After the pilot they will wear the WEP G8 Flight Jacket almost exclusively, but here they are wearing the Alpha MA-1 Flight Jacket. This jacket has a slightly different collar, an orange quilted lining and the pockets are of a different design. These jackets are available from Fatigues Army Navy in a variety of colors, including the 3-color desert camo. Sage, black, and navy are all also available. Although not canon to the show, I might consider picking up a navy blue one to have a jacket for wear with the blue BDU pants while "on base."

At this point there is no official Stargate Program, so there are no patches. Both are carrying MP5s with a single over the shoulder sling. The desert vests were custom made for the show and feature a wider mesh and variant pockets from normal desert tactical vests that are commercially available.

Jack and Daniel in the second half of the pilot (Children of the Gods). Here is the first time we see the patches with official SG team designations. Notice that in the pilot episode the team patch has a black number. Also, notice that Jack's OD WEP jacket has a pocket on both sleeves, rather than only one on the left sleeve. In this epsisode all are wearing the shiny version of the WEP. In future episodes it will be changed to mountain cloth. It is a good shot to see some of the equipment carried. Jack has the MP5, a Beretta 92 in holster, bayonet, and canteen. Both wear the standard issue Blackhawk Omega Medical Tactical Vest

Here we see Kawalsky, whose SG-2 patch also has a black number.

This is a good shot of Jackson's vest, you can see the hole punched in the pocket flap for the antenna of the Motorola Visar radio very clearly in this shot.

This shot is taken from the second episode of the series, Emancipation. Here we see the mountain cloth version of the jackets, O'Neill's taupe cap, Bugaboo glacier sunglasses, fingerless gloves and MP5 with sling and additional mag clip. Both he and Carter sport backpacks attached to the alice clips of their tac vests.

Here we see the team and clearly O'Neill is still wearing the team patch from the pilot with the black number where the rest of the team is wearing the team patch with silver numbers.

Patches...yes you need some stinking patches!

Any of the various Stargate uniforms you put together will need patches. The ONLY place to get your patches is Patchgeeks.com.

Don't waste time trying to go cheap. You might think you will feel good about saving money, but you will feel awful about the patches you get looking wrong. I bought a lot of useless patches from eBay before I reailzed I was wasting money started going exclusively with Patchgeeks.

The patch at the top is the SG team member patch. Patchgeeks has every SG team designation there is, so if you want to be a member of another team besides SG-1, feel free, the important thing is that you get the team desgination patch in the 4" size.

The top patch pictured on the left is the Stargate "SG-1" SG-1 Team Screen-Accurate 4" Patch for $9.00.

The center patch is the Stargate "SG-1" Earth Patch 3-5/8" Screen-Accurate Patch for $8.50.

The patch at the bottom is the Stargate USAF Black/Gray Service 3" Patch for $8.50. Only team members who are actually Air Force personel wear this patch.

On the series, the SG teams wore these patches with every version of their uniforms, and so these are the patches which are considered canon. However, in the real world, the military often does alternate color versions of their patches to suit specific uniforms and conditions. I went the extra step and bought these variations from Patchgeeks.

These are the Olive Drab patches, as you can see they match the other patches, but are all in green hues. The 4" SGC patch is the Stargate Command patch which would be worn by base personel who are not members of a specific SG team.

There are a wide variety of other alternate patches for the Team Patch. Take your time and browse the entire Patchgeek collection. You might find some interesting things. They also have a huge collection of other patches from other shows, such as Stargate Atlantis, Wormhole Extreme, Battlestar Galactica, and so on. I can't say enough good things about the high quality, wide selection, and excellent service this company provides.

I also got the entire Desert Tan set of alternate patches. I keep the OD and the Desert Tan patches in the pocket of my WEP jackets of those colors, just in case I need to switch them out.

It is extremely important to note that ALL of the patches worn by characters on the show are attached with velcro and NOT sewn directly onto the uniforms. The ONLY place to get your velcro is Williams & Williams. This company is really great and their customer service people are fantastic. On the page the link sends you to you can order die cut circles of both the hook and the loop sides of the velcro in the correct diameter and in the correct colors.

For the black and gray patches, order the 4", the 3.5" and the 3" hook circles in black.

For the Olive Drab, order the 4", the 3.5" and the 3" hook circles in OD.

For the Desert Tan, order the 4", the 3.5" and the 3" hook circles in Tan.

For each, you will want to also order the loop circles in the same sizes and colors. The black loop circles go on the black WEP jacket. The OD circles go on the OD WEP, and the Tan circles go on the 3-color Desert Camo.

For the 2 pocket BDUs you will want to order the 4" and 3.5" circles in OD and Navy. No one wears the 3" Air Force patch on the 2 pocket BDUs.

For the WEP jacket you will also want to order VelcroLoop 2x4 inches for nametags which goes on the WEP jackets. You will need OD, Tan, and Black for the three main WEPs. Might as well order them now to have them on hand.

I'll talk more about placement, sewing, etc. later, when we get to specific uniform pieces.

The Real Basics

Ok, if you're going to do this Stargate uniform thing, I've got some advice.

First, be prepared to spend a lot of money. This can't really be helped, but you can save quite a bit of time and money if you do some basic research and do things right the first time. Also, set yourself a budget and stick to it. You will want to have everything all at once, but if you limit yourself to a few pieces a month you will enjoy the hobby longer, save your marriage, and keep yourself from sitting in a complete canon uniform wondering why you couldn't pay the electric bill on time.

Second, get in shape. I don't care how accurate your uniform rig is, if you don't look like you could pass an Air Force physical, you're not canon. I know this sounds harsh, but an SG team has to be in excellent physical shape. I knew as soon as I put my first WEP jacket on that I didn't look or feel like a member of an SG team so I started jogging every morning, lifting weights, doing crunches, and eating more sensibly. In the last three weeks, I've lost 15 pounds and feel better than I have in years. And I look a lot better in that WEP jacket.

You should get DVDs of the entire series. These can be had pretty cheaply on eBay. Every re-enactor of any kind knows that the best way to ensure accuracy is to have a picture, and the series is the best source there is. Freeze frame, pull jpegs, study the costumes as closely as possible. Whenever possible, you will want to have a specific image from the show to use to create the costume from, and then pose yourself in the same position in your costume--that way, if you have a friend who is handy with Photoshop, you can replace the cast member in the image. Sweet.

Get Stargate SG-1: The Ultimate Visual Guide. This is an inexpensive treasure trove of information and reference images for costuming and props.

Don't impulse buy. Research everything to make sure what you are buying is going to work. This is especially true when buying on-line or through eBay. There are a lot of knock-offs that are not accurate and you will agonize over the money you waste buying something that you can't use because it is the wrong size, shape, or color.

I haven't been able to stick to this next piece of advice, but generally it is a good idea to build one complete uniform at a time rather than having a closet full of half-finished projects.

Clean up after you finish a session of working on something. Nothing will drive a wife or significant other crazy like stepping on needles, finding bits of velcro and thread all over the place or a TV room that looks like a supply depot blew up there.

Don't think for one minute that pressuring your wife or significant other to play Samantha Carter to your O'Neill is going to happen unless they come up with that idea on their own. If she wants a uniform, she'll ask you about it. If she does, that's great. If she doesn't, make sure you spend at least as much time and attention to her as you do the uniforms. Your splendid new Tokyo Marui P-90 is going to make it pretty tough to justify only getting her a card for your annniversary. And be sure to have other things to talk about with her than your SG-1 obsession. If she isn't wearing a uniform by her own choice, I doubt she wants to hear about yours as often as you want to talk about it. Hence this blog.

Be careful how often and where you wear your completed uniform. In the United States it is illegal to impersonate a member of the military. Lots of people wear cammo pants and combat boots...but wearing the whole rig out in public can get you noticed by people, and in a time of justifiable nervousness over unusual behavior you don't want to attract unwanted attention from law enforcement. This is 1,000 times more true if you happen to be wearing a tactical vest and carrying an airsoft gun.

Remember, your hobby should add joy to your life and relieve stress. It should not cost you your life or put you in prison.

Getting Started

Two years ago I had a bout of pneumonia and I was too weak to even change the channel with the remote. As fate would have it, I was parked on the couch with a Stargate SG-1 marathon on the Sci-Fi Channel.

In short, I got hooked. Last Christmas my wife went out of town for nearly a month to visit her family without me, while I was supposed to be working on a commissioned play. Unfortunately for the play, a friend had loaned me his entire DVD collection of Stargate from season 1 through season 8. I watched every single episode, in order, went out and bought season 9 and watched it too. Little did I know that doing this was akin to being indoctrinated in a cult.

For me, one of the primary attractions of the show...apart from excellent writing, acting, and special effects...was having a main character who was unashamedly in mid-life with graying hair. Just like me...well, apart from the unashamedly part, but Jack O'Neill gave me a role model sorely lacking on other television shows.

I think I was originally drawn to the theatre by the opportunities it affords to put on costumes and pretend. Wearing costumes has always been a big part of my life. So has pretending, to be honest. In highschool my step-mom made me a collarless Beatle suit and I worked nights as a dishwasher to save up for a "canon" bass guitar--the beautiful Hoefner Beatle Bass, left handed.

Well, you get the idea.

And this sort of thing always begins with the hats, so I started looking for a hat similar to the one O'Neill wears on the show. I quickly discovered it wasn't going to be a simple as just getting a hat. Not by a longshot. The image on the left is a screen worn cap from www.stargateprops.com, which sold for $750.

The hat worn on the show is a loose fit, 6-panel cap in black, taupe, or olive drab. It has no eyelets, and the buckle on the back is on the left rather than the right. These are just not available anywhere off the rack. In fact, the canon cap is one of the few items I still need to get, but looking for an O'Neill cap led me to a great resource. www.stargate6.com. This site used to have a great costuming portion run by a guy named LT, who had canon hats custom made for a very reasonable cost. Unfortunately, he has been laid up for a long time and the shop has had to close down because he can't fill any orders. No knowing when or if it will ever return.

Even though the shop has closed down for the time being, the website is still a very active forum for an international community of people who are enthusiasts for Airsoft guns (high end toys that shoot little yellow BBs) and who dress up in Stargate SG-1 uniforms that are as screen perfect as possible.

If it hadn't been for this incredibly useful forum and their collected knowledge, I'd never have been able to put together my uniforms as quickly or as completely as I have.

This blog is going to be a place where I track the building of my uniform sets, airsoft guns, props, and so forth.

Mostly because my wife doesn't want to hear about it and I have to tell somebody.
